Aromatherapy Global Online Research Archives (AGORA)  Lots of donated articles on-line including case studies, reviews, general information, safety issues, with some more thought-provoking essays.

Aromatherapy a site from Richard Tillman in the UK.  Some well-researched information from a knowledgeable practitioner.

Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy  
Research projects and articles by serious academics and practitioners.
Includes an outline of a project by Sylla Sheppard-Hanger, and Trevor Stokes into the use of essential oils and aromatherapy techniques with children with emotional and behavioural disorders such as autism and attention deficit  (The Psycho-Social Aromatherapy Research Projects (PARP).

Fragrant World A guide to aromatherapy by Graham Sorenson.  An extensive site offering lots of information and links, also with an oil to symptom - symptom to oil guide.

International Fragrance Association (IFRA) set up to regulate the fragrance industry.  Useful information on safety and legislation.

NAHA The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) is an educational, non-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing public awareness of the benefits of true aromatherapy - a USA site which needs membership but has free links to other useful sites.

Journals 

Positive Health Aromatherapy articles - lots of articles updated regularly

BMJ (British Medical Journal) CAM Therapy articles - a useful site from a well-respected resource - for dual qualified conventional/complementary practitioners using evidence-based practice. 
Also, try their  Customised @lerts, a free email service where you select from a very comprehensive list of options to be emailed when an article on your selected topic occurs - includes a selection for complementary therapies.

BNI (British Nursing Index) access via NHS libraries - consolidates references from over 200 health-related and nursing journals.

CHID (Combined Health Information Database) provides titles, abstracts, and availability information for health information and health education resources - updated 4 times a year.

ChemWeb  superb facility enabling free access to abstracts and full articles from journals including Critical Reviews in Plant Sciences and Phytotherapy.  Registration is free.

English National Board Healthcare Journal database - includes search facilities for all journals relevant to nursing, including Complementary Therapies in Medicine.

Free medical journals Free on-line full text articles form a growing resource - includes some complementary medicine journals.

Positive Health Magazine includes a research database, complementary centre and bookstore.  Texts of articles with full reference lists are available on-line with a good search facility - well worth a visit for serious research.

The British National Formulary  a database of drugs useful for looking up prescription medication, interactions and contra-indications for treatment.

R & H Rosenthal Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine  a good place to start for some serious research.  

CISCOM (Centralised Information Service for Complementary medicine)

HON - Health on the Net Foundation.  Access to several accurate and well-referenced resources to help with literature searches.

The Scientific Review of Alternative Medicine Reports and online articles.

National Electronic Library for Health - an incredible facility from the NHS.  Type in your search terms and it finds all the evidence you need for serious articles and research.

PubMed National Library of Medicine MEDLINE data base of clinical research.  PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's search service that provides access to over 11 million citations in MEDLINE, PreMEDLINE, and other related databases, with links to participating online journals.  Well-referenced material on herbal preparations including their essential oils in the CAM section.

RCCM (Research Centre for Complementary medicine).   The RCCM publishes a quarterly bulletin and provides a comprehensive database of research and information relating to the practice of complementary medicine (The Centralised Information Service for Complementary Medicine) CISCOM.  Much information is available on-line, with articles and resource packs available for order.  Containing over 50,000 references and abstracts of complementary medicine research from conventional and complementary journals and the RCCM's own research network.

Find Articles a vast archive of published articles from more than 300 journals that you can search for free.

NIH Clinical Center Drug Formulary  National Institute of health search facility for medications, interactions and their useage.

British Pharmacopoeia the UK version of the NIH

BNF - British National Formulary - always up to date information on medications, usage and interactions - the medical practitioner's bible.

Herbs and supplements

Botanical.com A hyper-text version of A Modern Herbal by M. Grieve. Over 800 varieties of medicinal, culinary, and cosmetic herbs, including economic properties, cultivation and folk-lore with facilities for a word search.

Botanical Dermatology Database a comprehensive database of  the effects of plants on the skin (although not the essential oils).

Culpepers complete herbal free online access to the complete work from Bibliomania

Herbal Materia Medica a HealthWorld Online site with extensive index to plants and herbs, their general chemical composition and use with a keyword search facility.

HerbMed  An interactive, electronic herbal database - provides hyperlinked access to the scientific data underlying the use of herbs for health (make sure you know the Latin names). It is an evidence-based information resource for professionals, researchers, and general public - good search facility but don't confuse the use of herbal preparations  with the equivalent essential oils.

Alternative medicine

A good site (although very commenrcial) for keeping up to date with Complementary Therapy news as it breaks.  You can organise Email bulletins sent directly to your personal address on any category that interests you including alternative health.

Alternative Medicine Foundation  
A guide to resources for both professional and users of complementary therapies.  Lots of links and information.

DietNet - lots of information on nutrition and diet and their effect on health and illness.

The Foundation for Integrated Medicine promoting integrated healthcare to patients, families and professionals.

Hom-Inform Information Database Glasgow Homoepathic Hospital's database library

IBIDS (International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements)  a database of published, international, scientific literature on dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, and botanicals.

Internet Health Library  
This site has been adopted as the British Complementary Medicine Association's official information resource.  Lots of good information on health issues, alternative and complementary therapies.  Abstracts and links to research and other organisations.

Reynolds Office of Health and Nutrition a commercial site but has an extensive symptom database listing all possible complementary remedies with advice on their use.

REACH Research and Education in Alternative and Complementary Healthcare - (formerly NORA (Natural Oils Research Association) 

OMNI Gateway free access to a searchable catalogue of internet sites for CAM

Chemistry and phytology

Delta then follow the link to 'Data' - a plant safety database, contains biochemistry and uses with references - very comprehensive and you need lots of time to weed out relevant information.

Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases offering a comprehensive database for the chemical constituents of plants and essential oils along with their therapeutic effects - all fully referenced.

IFRA The International Fragrance Association with guidelines for restricted essential oils, recommended dilutions and prohibited oils - follow the links to the 'Standards' section

Material Safety Data Sheets from the Essential Oil Company.  I wouldn't normally recommend a commercial site like this but the MSD sheets are invaluable for risk assessments.

National Library of medicine Toxline data base a chemical search feature form the National Library of Medicine

Phytochemical & Ethnobotanical databases a superb search facility from Leffingwell and Associates

Plant Net links to horticultural databases.
