Multi-sensory and interactive massage

Course aims

This course is particularly suited for people working with students with profound and multiple handicaps, sensory disabilities, communication disorders or difficult behaviours.  It us suitable to be taken on its own or as progression from the Aromatherapy and Learning Disabilities course.

You will examine how aromatherapy activities and massage can be used to stimulate the senses, develop quality time with the client, slowly building trust, then using a special relationship to encourage interaction and communication.  It looks at reducing challenging behaviour by offering a purposeful activity, including using massage and acupressure points to help reduce self harm or repetitive behaviour.

Using both a simple hand massage and different sensory experiences, you will learn the different stages of interaction from building on tolerance touch, through to enjoyment, with the ultimate aim of stimulating interaction and communication.

You will also learn how to assess and record an individual's progress through each stage using a simple graph technique.

Please bring a small towel for massage practice.
