Aromatherapy and learning disabilities

Course aims

This course looks at how essential oils and massage can be used safely to support both the physiological and emotional well-being of people with special needs.  It examines common disorders including Down syndrome, Fragile X, Multiple handicaps, as well as Autism and other behavioural problems.

You will learn how to ascertain a client's preference for fragrance to help with blending or the purchase of pre-blended essential oils, and how to use fragrance to help calm the client in times of anxiety.

You will also learn how massage and aromatherapy can offer a multi-sensory experience to help develop learning, relationships and communication.

You will also be introduced to the benefits of interactive and sensory massage.

Please bring a small towel for hand massage practice.

There will be opportunities to discuss how these skills can be used in your own care-setting, with advice on safety and policy for your own establishment or practice.
