CHIP Regulations

(Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations) 1994

CHIP Regulations 1994 contain all the information an essential oil supplier needs to store and supply hazardous chemicals.  The Material Safety Data Sheet supplied with each essential oil to the customer should identify by way of a Risk number (called Risk phrase), or Safety number (Safety phrase) what risks are associated with that particular essential oil.  The numbers are prefixed by the letter R for Risk, and S for Safety.

For example:

Melaleuca alternifolia (ct terpinol) (Tea tree) has a Risk phrase R10, R22, and R38.

R10 = flammable
R22 = harmful if swallowed
R38 = irritating to the skin

By displaying the Risk phrase on the material data sheet, a purchaser is immediately able to take the appropriate precautions when using the oil.  Risk and Safety information is essential when preparing risk assessments for using essential oils in the workplace.

The Safety Precaution phrase refers to storage and disposal risks associated with the essential oil.
