Baby massage

By Julie Slater
Why Massage? Massage is a common sight in Eastern cultures. It is something practised by the whole family both for the mother following birth and for the baby. The babies are massaged daily by their grandmothers and then their mothers. Massage helps to protect the babies skin from the sun, and encourages them to relax and become more flexible.
Through touch, a baby learns to experience pleasure, it enhances non-verbal communication between mother and child and it is an invaluable way to give a baby a sense of well being and relaxation.
Research has also shown that massage helps the body to release tension, which often arises from having to adapt to the world outside the womb.
Benefits of baby massage Massage enhances the process of bonding between a parent and their baby. It helps to establish a warm, loving relationship, it is a means for parents to express their love, and develop a better understanding of their child. This loving touch aids the baby's development both physically and emotionally.
Massage is recognised as a means of preparing the body for activity and relaxing it. For this reason it is extremely beneficial in a child's early development, preparing them for an upright posture and mobility. It is also an affective way to calm an unsettled baby. It gives the parents something positive to do, thus calming all.
