What is Asperger Syndrome?

Asperger syndrome is the term applied to the mildest and highest functioning end of what is known as the

AUTISTIC SPECTRUM

Notes

Asperger Syndrome was first recognised in the 1940’s by Hans Asperger. Only in the last 15 - 20 years has it become a more widely recognised syndrome, officially recognised in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1994.

Some experts say that Asperger Syndrome is separate to autism. Others say that it describes those at the higher end of the spectrum. that is, those with normal intelligence. The main difference between autism and Asperger syndrome is that the autistic child “lives in a world of his own” whereas the child with Asperger syndrome “lives in our world but in his own way” Wing (1991).

Whether separate or part of the same condition, intervention and support for both autism and Asperger Syndrome remains very much the same.
